Pro tip: I watched a friend try to fix a laptop screen with a butter knife from his kitchen

He thought any flat tool would work to pop the bezel, but he ended up cracking the plastic frame and damaging the ribbon cable. Has anyone else seen a simple mistake that turned a $20 part into a $150 repair?

That "simple mistake" part is the real kicker. People forget that plastic gets brittle over time, especially on old laptops. A butter knife has zero give, so it just acts like a wedge and snaps things. A plastic spudger is cheap and made to flex without breaking the clips.

My buddy learned this the hard way trying to fix his old ThinkPad with a kitchen knife. Totally agree with @oliverw46, the plastic just shattered under the metal. Now he has a spudger set and a laptop held together with tape.
