My dad showed me a trick with an old lamp cord and I felt dumb

I was complaining about how my phone charger keeps slipping out of the outlet and my dad just said 'you know you can tie a knot in the cord to stop that, right?'. He showed me how a simple overhand knot near the plug creates tension so it stays put. Why do older folks know all this stuff that nobody tells us?

Why would you want to fix a problem that takes half a second to deal with?

Holy crap, @spencer407, half a second? You're way off on that. Between unlocking my phone, opening the app, waiting for it to load, and then swiping through two or three things, we're talking more like 10 to 15 seconds each time. Do that 20 times a day and you've wasted a solid 3 to 5 minutes. That really adds up over a week.

Has anyone actually timed how long it takes to swipe through a single notification versus just ignoring it? I was sitting on my couch last week, phone in hand, and decided to count - it was about 8 seconds from seeing the badge to getting back to what I was doing. But honestly, the bigger waste for me is how that 8 seconds breaks my focus, so I end up spending another minute trying to remember what I was reading before. Your mileage may vary, but I've started just leaving my phone in another room during work hours and the time savings feel way bigger than any app optimization.
