Debate: does fabric type matter more than fit for a good first impression?

I wore a cheap polyester shirt to a networking event in Chicago last week and got way more compliments than my tailored cotton blazer the week before. Is it really about the material or how it drapes on you?

Right? I once ruined a whole job interview just because I was so focused on making a good first impression that I forgot to actually answer their questions...
