My professor said to avoid black for a spring collection. I did it anyway.
He told our class that black was too heavy for a seasonal line. Said it would not sell. I made a small capsule collection with black linen pieces anyway. Sold 15 units online in the first month. The feedback was people liked the contrast with lighter fabrics. Maybe the old rules are too strict. What other 'rules' do you think are ready to be broken?

Black linen sounds perfect for spring, honestly.

My graphic design teacher insisted we never use more than two fonts in a layout. For a local cafe's menu, I used three very purposefully. The owner loved how it created clear sections for drinks, food, and specials. Sometimes you just have to see the rule and then do what the project actually needs.

Yeah totally agree with this. I run a small landscaping company and my website guy told me never to use bright green as a background color. Said it looked cheap and unprofessional. I did it anyway for a spring promotion page and it actually got way more clicks than the plain white pages. @jessew83 youre right that rules just don't fit every project. Sometimes you just gotta trust what your gut says and ignore the old school advice. People buy stuff based on how it makes them feel not just some textbook rule.
