Talked to my grandma about her old dress patterns and now I feel like I've been overthinking everything

She pulled out a pattern from 1965, just a simple A-line dress with no darts or crazy shaping. She said "we just let the fabric do the work back then." Made me realize I spend way too much time fussing with fit and structure when half the time a looser shape looks better anyway. Has anyone else had an older relative totally change how you look at something simple?

Jumped headfirst into sewing my own clothes a few years back and immediately became that person who obsesses over every seam. My nana watched me stress over a collar for three hours once, then just grabbed the fabric, folded it twice, pinned it wrong side out, and said "it's a collar, not brain surgery." She was right. I was out here trying to engineer a t-shirt like it was going to hold up a bridge. Now I make a point to cut corners on purpose sometimes, just to remind myself a slightly crooked hem never killed nobody.

My machine from the 50s still sews perfect buttonholes no computer chip needed.
