My buddy's comment about his smartwatch battery made me stop reading specs

He said 'I don't care if it lasts 7 days, I just need it to make it through my 14-hour shift.' I realized I've been comparing numbers in reviews without thinking about real use. What's a gadget you bought where the review stats didn't match your actual life?

Oh man, that hits home. I bought a laptop they said had great battery life for travel. All the reviews talked about eight hours of use. But my real use is having twenty browser tabs open and a video playing, and it conks out in three. The numbers never seem to match the mess of actually using stuff.

Got a fitness tracker that counted steps while I was driving.

Honestly, while you were driving? That's wild.

That point about the laptop battery is fair, but I've found the opposite. Those review numbers are a solid baseline. My last phone had a rated battery life that seemed low, but in my daily use it actually lasted longer than the specs said. The tests are done under controlled conditions so you can compare one gadget to another. If your real life use kills it faster, that's useful data too. It tells you your needs are higher than the average case they test for.
