Just realized my whole plan for fixing a squeaky floor was wrong
Last week, I tried to fix a squeaky spot in my living room by driving 3-inch screws down through the carpet, which everyone online says is the right move. It just made the squeak louder and now I've got a weird lump under the rug. Why do we all just accept that as the best fix when it can make things worse?

That "we all just accept that as the best fix" line is so true. I bet half the people giving that advice have never actually done it. The real problem is nobody talks about the subfloor. If it's warped or separated from the joist, a screw just pulls it down and creates a new pressure point. You're fighting the wood instead of joining it. You might need to open it up from below to see what's really going on.

Exactly, you're just making a new weak spot. Gotta fix the real problem first.
