Our book club in Austin spent three weeks arguing over the ending of 'Klara and the Sun'

Half of us, led by my friend Carla, think the ending is hopeful and shows Klara's love was real. The other half think it's a bleak commentary on how we use and discard artificial life. The debate got so heated we had to table it and read a romance novel as a palate cleanser. Which side are you on, hopeful or bleak?

Three weeks arguing over a book ending? That's some serious dedication. Maybe it's not meant to be totally hopeful or totally bleak, you know? Life's messy, so why can't a story be both? Did you guys ever think you're looking for a clear answer where there isn't one?

We actually did agree on that part. The fight was about whether the author left enough clues for the reader to figure it out, or if it was just sloppy writing. Some endings are too messy on purpose.

My book club once spent a whole meeting on a single comma, so three weeks sounds about right.
