Paid for a 'lifetime' VPN subscription that vanished after 8 months

I saw an ad for a service called SecureTunnelPro offering a one-time $75 payment for a lifetime VPN. Figured it was a deal, but their website just went offline last month with no warning. I mean, I should have known it was too good to be true, but it looked legit at the time. Has anyone else had a VPN service just disappear like that, and what do you look for to avoid scams?

Ugh, that's so frustrating, sorry that happened. I got burned by a "lifetime" software deal years ago. Now I only trust bigger, well-known companies with clear monthly or yearly plans, even if it costs more. I also check for real contact info and a physical address, not just a contact form. What kind of research do you do before buying something online now?

Wait, you think bigger companies are always safer? I've seen some of them change their terms or kill products just as fast. Honestly I look for recent user reviews, like from the past few months, to see if people are still happy. A physical address is a good call though, I'll start checking for that too.

Blake's right about reviews from the last few months being key, I got burned by a VPN that had great old reviews but zero from the past year. Looking for a physical address is solid advice too, I start by googling the company name plus "scam" or "complaint" to see if anything sketchy pops up. Checking a site like Reddit or Trustpilot for recent drops in activity usually tells you if they're about to vanish.
