Hot take: Ditched the itinerary, stumbled into a tiny island church

Stopped planning every minute of my trips. Got lost on a backroad in Maine. Followed a hand painted sign for lemonade. Ended up at a church service for seagulls. They had little bird sized pews. Never going back to strict schedules.

Seriously, my best meal last year was from getting hopelessly turned around in some little town. The planned dinner spot was closed, so we just walked into the first open door we saw. Sometimes the wrong turn is the whole point.

You ever decline the rental car GPS? I started doing that and it forces you to actually look at road signs. My rule now is to always follow a handwritten sign for anything, a yard sale, farm stand, whatever. That's how you find the weird stuff no blog ever lists.
