Almost lost a dig site last week because of a simple permit oversight

I was out near Santa Fe on Wednesday and the county inspector showed up asking for paperwork I'd filed 3 years ago that apparently expired. Has anyone else dealt with these renewal deadlines sneaking up on them?

Everyone told me to use a 0.5mm mechanical pencil for drafting, but I switched to 0.7mm and got way better results

I spent 6 months fighting with 0.5mm lead snapping every time I pressed a little hard on my blueprint. A guy at a supply shop in Omaha told me to try 0.7mm for my line work and I thought he was crazy. Turns out the thicker lead gives me cleaner arcs and I don't have to stop every 10 minutes to re-sharpen or click out more lead. Anyone else ditch the "standard" size for something that just works better for them?

Can we talk about how I used to copy code from Stack Overflow without reading it?

Back in 2022 I would just paste whole blocks of Python code into my project without a clue what each line did. It worked for maybe 3 months until a small bug broke everything and I had no idea how to fix it. Now I rewrite every snippet by hand line by line, even if it takes twice as long. Has anyone else had that moment where copied code came back to bite them?

Finally had a level subfloor turn into a 3 day nightmare in Kitchener

I took on a job last week in Kitchener, small living room maybe 300 sq ft. Client said subfloor was good to go, just slap the LVP down. Got there and it was off by almost 3/8 of an inch in the middle, a huge hump. I spent 2 whole days just grinding and patching with self leveler, and still had to wait overnight for it to cure before I could even start laying planks. The actual flooring took maybe 6 hours lol. So my question is, how long do you guys normally budget for subfloor fixes vs the actual install? Do you always check with a long level first or just trust the homeowner?

Met an old Cabinetmaker in Denver who changed how I sand

I was at a trade show in Denver last fall and this guy in his 70s showed me his trick for using a cork block with 220 grit for the final pass on face frames. He said most guys quit too early and that's why their finish feels rough after 6 months. Has anyone else tried skipping power sanders for that last step?

Lost my map in a downpour on the Smoky Mountains trail last month

I was hiking the Appalachian Trail section near Clingmans Dome when a sudden storm hit. A gust of wind ripped my paper map right out of my hand and sent it down a ravine. I was soaking wet for 2 hours with no cell service. Has anyone else had luck with waterproof map cases or do you just memorize the route?

Ripped my muslin mockup in half by accident - best fitting mistake ever

Was draping a bodice last Tuesday at my studio and pulled the fabric too hard, tore it right at the shoulder seam. Turned out the rip showed me exactly where I needed more ease, so now I purposefully stress-test my muslins before cutting the real fabric. Anyone else find happy accidents like this while draping?

Changed my mind about buying replica coins for my collection

For years I thought real ancient coins were the only way to go and I looked down on replicas. Then I dropped $150 on a real Roman denarius that turned out to be a modern fake anyway. That burned me pretty bad and made me realize replicas at least tell you upfront what they are. Picked up a set of 5 museum quality replicas for $60 total from a site called Ancient Replicas. They look great on my shelf and I don't have to worry about authenticity drama. Has anyone else switched from real finds to quality copies?

Spent 45 minutes looking for the scoring pad that was under the rulebook the whole time...

My group was setting up Terraforming Mars and I tore the whole house apart looking for the scoring pad, only to find it wedged between the rulebook and the box insert like it was hiding on purpose. Has anyone else had a game component vanish for way too long?

Rant: I was salting my pasta water WRONG for years

I always followed the whole 'salty like the sea' thing and dumped in like a tablespoon per pot. Last week my friend from Italy watched me cook and literally laughed. She said I was wasting salt because most of it goes down the drain and you only need enough to season the pasta itself, not the whole ocean. Tried it her way with just a teaspoon and guess what? Tasted exactly the same. Has anyone else realized they were overdoing some kitchen rule for no reason?
