Update: The crawl space job that ate my whole Friday

Got called out to a house in Springfield for a simple coax run to a new home office. The crawl space access was in a closet, no big deal, right? Wrong. The previous installer had just tossed a huge bundle of old, unused cable across the entire length of the house, blocking the path completely. It was a rat's nest of RG-59 and chewed-up RG-6, all tangled with insulation. I figured an hour to clear it. It took me four hours just to cut out and pull all that old junk, and my back is killing me from being hunched over. Why do people just leave their trash for the next guy? Has anyone else had a simple job blow up because of someone else's lazy cleanup?

Had a client ask for a 'reverse mohawk' and it went sideways

A guy came in yesterday and insisted I shave a clean strip down the middle of his head, leaving the sides long, which he called a 'reverse mohawk'. I used my Wahl Detailer, but the guard slipped and I ended up with a stripe about an inch and a half wide instead of a clean line. What's the weirdest cut request you've ever gotten that just didn't work out?

Changed my mind about guest lounge lighting after a hotel stay in Savannah

I always thought a guest lounge needed bright overhead lights... but the one at The Marshall House last month had these warm, low lamps in the corners. It completely changed the vibe from a waiting area to a place you actually wanted to sit and talk. The manager said they swapped the old fluorescents out about six months ago and guest time spent in the lounge doubled. Anyone else notice a small change that made a huge difference in a lounge space?

I thought the whole 'wrap your brisket in butcher paper' thing was just a fad, but after my third one came out dry, I gave it a shot.

I was a foil guy for a long time. Figured it was all the same. Then I did a side-by-side on my offset last weekend: one in foil, one in pink butcher paper from the local shop. The foil one was falling apart, sure, but the bark was mush. The paper one held a better bark and the flat was way more juicy. I'm not saying it's magic, but for a 16-hour cook, the difference was real. Anyone else do a test like this and get surprised?

Just lost a whole morning's pay on a bad crimper

Bought a cheap crimper for RJ31X jacks last month, and it mangled every single connector. Had to redo a whole panel at a job in Springfield, which cost me about $150 in time. Anyone have a crimper brand that actually lasts?

Appreciation post: I tried a 3/8 inch roundover bit on a walnut slab and it blew my mind

Was building a console table for a client in Boise. Figured a small roundover would be safe on the live edge. Wrong. It grabbed and tore out a huge chunk, ruined the piece. Cost me two days and the slab. Learned the hard way: you need to support that live edge with a backer block, no shortcuts. Anyone have a good fix for tear-out after it happens?

Pro tip: A chat with my buddy at the studio changed how I handle my punty

I was over at the River Arts District studio last week, and my friend Mark was watching me work. I was doing my usual thing, getting ready to transfer a piece off the pipe, and he just goes, 'You know, you're holding your breath right before you tap it off.' I had no idea I was doing that, but he was right. He said he used to do the same thing and it made his transfers shaky because his whole arm would tense up. He told me to try breathing out slow and steady through the whole move, like you're blowing a bubble but with your nose. I tried it on the next three pieces, and wow, it was way smoother. The glass just let go cleaner. It's such a small thing, but it made a huge difference in my control. Has anyone else picked up a tiny habit like that from watching someone else work?

Question about the 'cult of the new' at my local game night

Last week at our meetup in Springfield, I brought my copy of a game from 2015. It's a solid tile layer that my group used to play every month. A guy I hadn't met before took one look at the box and said, 'Oh, that's old. We only play stuff from the last two years here.' In my experience, this push to only play the newest hotness means we miss out on great games that have stood the test of time. Three years ago, this same group played a 2010 auction game that's still my favorite, but I haven't seen it hit the table since 2021. It feels like we're chasing hype instead of depth. I get wanting to try new things, but dismissing a game just because it's not fresh off the press seems short sighted. Has anyone else's group gotten stuck in this cycle?
