My new miter saw stand folded in half on a job site yesterday

Was cutting crown molding for a client in Denver and the locking pins just gave out on my portable stand. Dropped the saw on my foot and ruined $200 worth of trim. Anyone else had a stand fail on them like that?

The homeowner said the old floor was fine to just go over it. I pulled up a corner and saw daylight between the planks. Anyone else deal with customers insisting on skipping the prep work?

Saw a safety study on the Bike League site last night. 90% of bike accidents happen at intersections where side visibility matters. My little blinkies only throw light forward and back. Picked up some spoke lights for $12 on Amazon. Anyone else worried about being seen from the side?

Picked a local supplier over a big box store for our drafting tables

I had to choose between a $400 table from a big box store or a $650 one from a local shop 30 miles away. Went with the local guy because he let me test the tilt mechanism right there. The big box table had a plastic gear that felt flimsy after 5 minutes of messing with it. My local table is solid oak and the angle lock hasn't slipped once in 8 months. Have any of you had luck finding used drafting furniture at estate sales instead of buying new?

I was scrolling through a listing for a cheap desk lamp last night and noticed the top reviews were all from 2012 or earlier. Back then people would write paragraphs about how the hinge held up after 3 years or if the bulb flickered. Now you get 2 word reviews like "works great" from people who probably used it once. What happened to the detailed stuff we used to lean on for buying decisions? Anybody else scroll back to old reviews on purpose now?

My mom's 'cheap' chili recipe actually saved me $40 this week

Last Monday I was staring at my grocery bill and nearly had a heart attack. My mom has been telling me for years to make a big pot of chili with canned beans and tomatoes instead of buying premade stuff. I finally tried her recipe using two cans of kidney beans, a can of diced tomatoes, some onion and garlic powder, and a pound of the cheapest ground beef I could find. It made enough for five meals and cost me like $12 total. I usually spend $8 to $10 on a single takeout bowl from the place downtown. So yeah, she was right and I was being stubborn for no reason. Anyone else have a family recipe that slaps way harder than the expensive versions?

Update on my miter saw station after a fellow carpenter in Boise said my stop block setup was 'a disaster waiting to happen'

He pointed out that my single, long stop block could flex over 1/16th of an inch on long cuts, so I switched to using two shorter, beefier blocks spaced apart for support, which completely fixed the accuracy issue, so has anyone else found a better way to lock down long stock for repeated cuts?

I read a blog where a builder argued you should always use 3 inch deck screws for framing, but my neighbor swears by 5 inch. Which is actually better?
